Those cool, insanely balanced rock stacks we've seen a multitude of various places on the beaches, trails & parks are a trend that's been going on social media for years. However, this practice has been significant for many other reasons for thousands of years.
There are myriad of names for rock stacking. There are also just as many reasons for them. They've been used for marking trails in secluded places, to signifying grave sites, and now, for a cool Instagram pic.
Many tribes used them for art, worship, and marking territory. Nowadays, some find it "zen," or just want something "meaningful and natural" for their social media presence.
I'm not slamming it, in fact, I've done it, lol! However, conservationists frown upon the disruption of the natural surroundings, and even say that moving these rocks can cause premature erosion. Well crap, I didn't think of that! It makes sense though.
When you see the signs and know to leave no traces of human contact also includes manipulating the rocks. Though, others do retort that these formations are quintessential in marking trails in highly secluded areas. These markings, many believe, have the capability to save lives by marking the proper ways to navigate through secluded terrain. This also makes a lot of sense!
So what would be the conclusion, or lesson here? I learned that manipulating nature can do harm, even if it's simply moving a stone. Leave nothing but footprints & take a craptastic amount of photos instead!
Happy glamping!
